HIT AND MISSES: CONAN THE BARBARIAN
1977 - 1981
With Newton closed for good the license to reprint Marvel comics within Australia was snapped up by page Publications who specialised in printing populist magazines on topics such as Hot Rod cars and sports. Page, via it's subsidiary Yaffa, would publish Marvel reprint comics into the early 1980s when Federal would step into the scene. During their short time Page/Yaffa managed to print at least seventeen separate comic books related to Conan. It is highly possible that there are more titles yet to be uncovered as Page/Yaffa had a tendency to print comics with unusual titles as one-shot issues. Another trait of Page/Yaffa was chopping up stories to make them fit their standard template, that being three reprinted issues of black and white line art in each book, both magazine size and digest size. Unlike Newton Page/Yaffa didn't try to compete with the more popular full colour comic books by attempting to be competitive, instead they printed large sized titles with anywhere from sixty or more pages per issue at a competitive price. The Page/Yaffa issues also attempted to sustain a form of continuity by reprinting stories in sequence.
Page/Yaffa managed to print two definite titles of Conan, the main title CONAN THE BARBARIAN along with SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN, plus at least two one-shot titles, KING CONAN and UNTAMED WORLDS OF CONAN. Another trait of Yaffa was their insistence on reprinting material towards the end of their license. Hence you will always find straight reprints of earlier material with either new numbers, or un-numbered, with the same covers and contents. At least two reprints of this type exist, reprints of Conan #1 and Savage Sword Of Conan #1, issued in the early 1980s.
CONAN THE BARBARIAN
This title lasted for eleven issues. The first four and the last issue in the run were magazine sized and black and white. Issues five to ten were digest sized and also black and white. It was in the digest sized comics that the story editing/mutilation occurred on a larger scale than the magazine sized titles.
Issue #1 reprinted THE COMING OF CONAN by Thomas, Smith and Dan Adkins from Conan The Barbarian #1 (USA), LAIR OF THE BEAST-MEN by Thomas, Smith and Buscema from Conan The Barbarian #2 (USA) and THE TWILIGHT OF THE GRIM GREY GOD by Thomas, Smith and Sal Buscema from Conan The Barbarian #3 (USA)
Issue #2 reprinted THE TOWER OF THE ELEPHANTS by Thomas, Smith and Sal Buscema from Conan The Barbarian #4 (USA), ZUKALA'S DAUGHTER by Thomas, Smith and Frank Giacoia from Conan The Barbarian #5 (USA) and DEVIL WINGS OVER SHADIZAR by Thomas, Smith and Sal Buscema from Conan The Barbarian #5 (USA).
Issue #3 reprinted THE LURKER WITHIN by Thomas, Smith, Adkins and Sal Buscema from Conan The Barbarian #7 (USA), THE KEEPERS OF THE CRYPT by Thomas, Smith, Tom Sutton and Tom Palmer from Conan The Barbarian #8 (USA) and THE GARDEN OF FEAR by Thomas, Smith and Sal Buscema Conan The Barbarian #9 (USA).
Issue #4 reprinted BEWARE THE WRATH OF ANU by Thomas, Smith and Sal Buscema from Conan The Barbarian #10 (USA) and ROGUES IN THE HOUSE by Thomas, Smith and Sal Buscema from Conan The Barbarian #11 (USA)
The title then was continued in a digest sized format with poor cover graphics and generally muddy and dark interior reproduction
.
Issue #5 reprinted A SWORD CALLED STORMBRINGER by Thomas, Smith and Sal Buscema from Conan The Barbarian #14 (USA), THE GREEN EMPRESS OF MELINBONE by Thomas, Smith and Sal Buscema from Conan The Barbarian #15 (USA) and WEB OF THE SPIDER-GOD by Thomas, Smith and Sal Buscema from Conan The Barbarian #13 (USA).
Issue #6 reprinted THE FROST GIANT'S DAUGHTER by Thomas and Smith from Savage Tales #1 (USA), SWORD AND THE SORCERERS by Thomas and Smith from Conan The Barbarian #16 (USA) and THE GODS OF THE BAL-SAGOTH by Thomas and Gil Kane from Conan The Barbarian #17 (USA) and THE THING IN THE TEMPLE by Thomas, Kane and Adkins from Conan The Barbarian #18 (USA).
Issue #7 reprinted HAWKS FROM THE SEA by Thomas, Smith and Adkins from Conan The Barbarian #19 (USA), THE BLACK HOUND OF VENGEANCE by Thomas, Smith and Adkins from Conan The Barbarian #20 (USA) and MONSTER OF THE MONOLITHS by Thomas, Smith, Craig Russell, Val Mayerik and Sal Buscema from Conan The Barbarian #21 (USA). The second story is missing it's splash page in order to give the impression that both stories were one larger story.
Issue #8 reprinted THE COMING OF CONAN by Thomas, Smith and Dan Adkins from Conan The Barbarian #1 (USA), THE SHADOW OF THE VULTURE by Thomas, Smith, Sal Buscema, Adkins and Chic Stone from Conan The Barbarian #23 (USA) and THE SONG OF RED SONJA by Thomas and Smith from Conan The Barbarian #24 (USA).
Issue #9 reprinted THE MORRORS OF KHARAM AKKAD by Thomas, John Buscema, Sal Buscema and John Severin from Conan The Barbarian #25 (USA), THE HOUR OF THE GRIFFIN by Thomas, John Buscema and Ernie Chua (Chan) from Conan The Barbarian #26 (USA) and THE BLOOD OF BEL-HISSAR by Thomas, John Buscema and Chau (Chan) from Conan The Barbarian #27 (USA). Again, the second story has the splash page edited out to give the impression of a large, seamless story.
Issue #10 reprinted MOON OF ZEMBABWEI by Thomas, John Buscema and Chau (Chan) from Conan The Barbarian #28 (USA), TWO AGAINST TURAN by Thomas, John Buscema and Chau (Chan) from Conan The Barbarian #29 and THE HAND OF NERGAL by Thomas, John Buscema and Chau (Chan) from Conan The Barbarian #30 (USA).
The last issue in the series reverted back to a magazine sized comic.
Issue #11 reprinted THE COMING OF CONAN by Thomas, Smith and Dan Adkins from Conan The Barbarian #1 (USA), LAIR OF THE BEAST-MEN by Thomas, Smith and Buscema from Conan The Barbarian #2 (USA) and THE TWILIGHT OF THE GRIM GREY GOD by Thomas, Smith and Sal Buscema from Conan The Barbarian #3 (USA) and was an exact copy of the first issue.
Also digest size was KING CONAN and UNTAMED WORLD OF CONAN. These appear to be one-shot issues, although there may be more than one issue of KING CONAN in existence.
UNTAMED WORLD OF CONAN reprinted THE TOWER OF THE ELEPHANT by Thomas, Smith and Sal Buscema from Conan The Barbarian #4 (USA), ZUKALA'S DAUGHTER by Thomas, Smith and Frank Giacoia from Conan The Barbarian #5 (USA) and DEVIL WINGS OVER SHADIZAR by Thomas, Smith and Sal Buscema from Conan The Barbarian #6 (USA).
KING CONAN #1 reprinted THE WITCH OF THE MISTS, by Thomas, John Buscema and Ernie Chan from King Conan #1 (USA) and THE BLACK SPHINX OF NEBTHU by Thomas, John Buscema and Chan from King Conan #2 (USA). The second story has the splash page edited out in order to present the two stories as being one.
SAVAGE SWORD OF CONAN
This title lasted for at least four issues, with the first issue appearing in 1978 and the last in 1980, making it an annual more than an ongoing regular title. The contents of this title mirrored the American counterpart although shorter text pieces and stories were often dropped and pages edited out.
Issue #1 reprinted THE CURSE OF THE UNDEAD-MAN by Thomas, John Buscema and Pablo Marcos from Savage Sword Of Conan #1 (USA), CONAN'S FORGOTTEN WOMEN by Fred Blosser from Savage Sword Of Conan #1 (USA) and THE FROST GIANT'S DAUGHTER by Thomas and Smith from Savage Sword Of Conan #1 (USA). While the reproduction of the latter story is superior to the version that appears in issue #6 of the Page/Yaffa Conan The Barbarian series, this version is missing half of the original splash page, although it is otherwise uncensored.
Issue #2 reprinted BLACK COLOSSUS by Thomas, John Buscema and Alfredo Alcala from Savage Sword Of Conan #2 (USA).
Issue #3 reprints AT THE MOUNTAIN OF THE MOON-GOD by Thomas, John Buscema and Pablo Marcos from Savage Sword Of Conan #3 (USA) and DEMONS OF THE SUMMIT by Thomas and Tony deZuniga from Savage Sword Of Conan #3 (USA).
Issue #4 reprinted IRON SHAWOWS IN THE MOON by Thomas, John Buscema and Alfredo Alcala from Savage Sword Of Conan #4 (USA) and THE CORBAN CONAN by Rich Corban from Savage Sword Of Conan #4 (USA).
My belief is that is where the title stops.
